Abstract
Health and Welfare, Prefectural University of Hiroshima The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the perception of lonely death risk and the preparation for a lonely death on the preference for institutional care among the elderly living alone. For this study, a sample 676 the elderly living alone in Seoul was used and logistic regression analyses were employed. Also, the sample was divided into young-old and old-old groups to compare the effects of lonely death-related factors on preference for institutional care between two groups. The results showed that the elderly who highly aware of the risk of the experience of lonely death were likely to prefer institutional care in the entire sample. However, the elderly who prepared for lonely death did not prefer institutional care. In addition, the level of awareness of the risk of the experience of lonely death had a positive association with a preference for institutional care in the young-old group. In the old-old group, participants who highly aware of the risk of the experience of and did not (could not) prepare for lonely death were likely to prefer institutional care. Based on these findings, this study suggested the needs by lack of relational resources should be considered as an important factor in the research looking at the use and preferences for care types, and pointed out that the current care policy stance emphasis on care in home and community may not be appropriate for the elderly with special needs. Also, it discussed the need to establish and expand of care infrastructure to diversify care options of the elderly.
